Livestock Farming

Vision

The modern livestock farming is evolving like almost no other branch of the agrarian economy in the area of conflict between consumer expectations, economic pressures and technological frame conditions. The contradictions which are inherent to this conflict result at least partly from the necessary combination of the three different (IASP) systems: the “animal”, “technique” and “human being” systems. Beyond media attention and emotional perception it is urgently required to research in order to scientifically analyze and assess these contradictions and derive practical recommendations and technological process developments.
The line of research on the development and improvement of livestock farming is attached to the interface between animals and technique. On the basis of own technologies and algorithms of the sensor-aided animal monitoring some concepts, methods and procedures are developed to assess the psychological status of livestock in a non-invasive way. These monitoring procedures serve the purpose of optimizing technological parameters and economic relevant criteria of the use-oriented livestock farming, with particular regard to animal welfare. In accordance with this goal, current research projects are concentrated in the analysis and assessment of the animal welfare of livestock farming systems. Another focus is the reliable detection of a deviation from performance-related parameters (e.g. oestrus, pregnancy) on the one hand and from the individual “normal conditions” to identify stressors or rather disease symptoms as soon as possible on the other hand. A third research area in the field of livestock farming is the optimization and development of feeding methods and fodders. The objects of research are in every case the farmed animals beef, pig, poultry, horse and fish.
