Biogenic Raw Materials


While one of the protagonists of Goethe’s Faust says: “For all that doth begin / should rightly to destruction run”, the visionary approach in the line of research on biogenic raw materials lies in not letting anything, that has “begun” in the agriculture and food economy, “run to destruction”. The focus is on the concept of cycle, which shows itself (among other manifestations) in the research and development of technological procedures to use by-products from production and processing methods. It has in the current definitions of “sustainability” at least one ecological and one economic component. Ecologically the avoidance of waste, the acquisition of biomass potentials and the completion of material and energetic cycles are at the focus. In economic terms, the development of technological means of an additional value gains a concrete business meaning, on the one hand, and also a economic significance, on the other hand. Extensive works in this line of research are oriented towards the development of innovative methods to obtain valuable materials from (1) the direct by-products (“residues”) from the vegetal and animal production and (2) the material processing or energetic exploitation of the main products from these production methods. Some examples are the current research works on the employment of fibers (both from plant and animal origin), on biogas production (with a focus on the incoming and outgoing substrates) as well as on the optimization of the processes of the material and energetic use of biogenic raw materials.
